Addicted to Love
It’s catchy. It’s iconic. And let’s be honest—when “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer comes on, we’re all at least a little tempted to sing along. That pulsing beat, the lyrics about being consumed and out of control… It's a song that sticks in your head.
"You might as well face it, you're addicted to love."
But every time I hear that line, it makes me think deeper. What are we addicted to? What do we crave so strongly that it pulls at our minds and hearts—sometimes more than we’d like to admit?
The World’s Obsessions vs. God’s Call
The world has a long list of addictions:
Romance
Social media
Money
Status
Control
Even the idea of being constantly entertained
And sure, love can be a beautiful thing. But when anything—even something good—takes God’s place in our lives, it becomes a counterfeit god. An idol.
God doesn’t shy away from this topic. In fact, He addresses it right from the start:
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” – Exodus 20:3
We were made to worship—but if we’re not intentionally worshiping God, we’ll end up worshiping something else. And more often than not, we don’t even realize we’ve become addicted.
The Bible Talks About Addiction
Paul writes:
“All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.” – 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NASB)
In other words: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Especially if it starts controlling you.
Addiction isn’t always about substances. Sometimes it’s about habits. Thought patterns. Relationships. Reactions. It’s the pull that whispers, “Just one more time. "It’s the scroll that turns into hours lost. It’s the approval we chase because our identity is tied to it.
Trading Obsession for Devotion
What if we flipped the script? What if, instead of being addicted to the temporary things of the world, we were addicted to the presence of God?
What if we genuinely craved time in His Word the way we crave our morning coffee?
What if we were so in love with Jesus that it shaped everything—from how we speak to how we scroll?
Here’s the truth: You will be addicted to something. The question is, will it give life—or drain it?
“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13
Time for a Heart Check
Ask yourself:
What fills my mind when I have a quiet moment?
What do I turn to for comfort when I’m stressed, lonely, or overwhelmed?
Is there anything in my life that’s gotten too big—bigger than God?
A Prayer for Surrender
Lord, I don’t want to be mastered by anything but You. Reveal the things I’ve placed above You. Help me crave Your presence more than any worldly escape. Make my heart addicted to truth, to grace, to love that never fails. Amen.
