Love Lifted Me: A Devotional on God’s Saving Grace

A man in a red and white robe helps another from stormy sea. Light beams down, seagulls fly, and a lighthouse stands on rocky cliffs in the distance.

Have you ever felt like you were sinking in life—overwhelmed, burdened, or weighed down by guilt, shame, or heartbreak? Maybe you’ve felt like you were drifting far from where you hoped to be. I’ve been there too. But in those moments, I’ve found something (or better yet, Someone) stronger than the waves—God’s love.

The old hymn "Love Lifted Me" paints such a vivid picture of this truth:

“I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me—now safe am I.”

Let’s unpack the powerful message behind this song in a 3-point devotional.

1. God’s Love Rescues Us from the Deep

📖 “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” – Psalm 40:2

When the hymn says, “I was sinking deep in sin,” it reminds me that sin isn’t always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s the quiet stuff—guilt, bitterness, insecurity—that drags us under. But God doesn’t leave us there. His love reaches into our mess, pulls us up, and gives us solid ground to stand on.

Reflection: Think about a time when you felt like you were drowning. How did God meet you in that place? Maybe it was through a verse, a friend, or a quiet moment where peace broke through. That was love, lifting you.

2. God’s Love Draws Us Near

📖 “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” – James 4:8

One of my favorite lines from the chorus is simple but powerful: “Love lifted me.” Not effort. Not perfection. Not checking all the boxes. Love.

When we draw near to God—even if all we have to offer is a whispered prayer—He meets us with arms wide open. His love lifts our hearts, changes our perspective, and reminds us who we are in Him.

Reflection: Today, intentionally draw near. Whisper a prayer, sing a worship song, or take a walk and talk to God. He’s not far. He’s waiting to lift you again.

3. God’s Love is Active and Redeeming

📖 “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life… shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39

"When nothing else could help, love lifted me." Whew. That hits deep. We all have things that couldn’t fix us—relationships, success, money, even our own striving. But God’s love? It did what nothing else could. Jesus didn’t just talk about love. He lived it. He walked to the cross, rose again, and now offers that same redeeming love to you and me. Nothing can separate us from it.

Reflection: Where have you seen God redeem your past? Where do you still need His love to heal and restore? Let His unshakeable love wash over those places today.

Final Thoughts

Friend, no matter how deep the waters may feel, you are never beyond God’s reach. His love is stronger than your struggles, greater than your shame, and closer than your next breath.

Let this song be your reminder: Love lifted me, and it can lift you too.
