He Has Authority: Over the Storm, the Body, the Heart

There are moments in life when we wonder what Jesus actually has authority over. Is His power spiritual only? Is it symbolic? Is it limited to salvation after death?
Scripture answers that question clearly.
Jesus has authority over everything that touches human life: the body, the world around us, and the condition of the heart.
Let’s walk through what the Bible shows.
He Has Authority Over All Things
Jesus Himself said:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18)
That statement leaves no room for doubt. His authority is not partial. It is complete.
When people weaken or distort that truth, faith suffers. Paul warned in 2 Timothy 2:18 that false teaching about Christ can overthrow the faith of some. That is why it matters to understand who Jesus really is and what He truly controls.
His authority reaches heaven and earth alike. Nothing sits outside His rule.
He Has Authority Over the Physical World
In Matthew 8:23–27, the disciples panic during a violent storm. Jesus simply speaks, and the wind and waves obey Him.
Nature answers to Him because He created it.
Job 38:22 reminds us God commands the storehouses of snow and storm. When Jesus calmed the sea, He was not borrowing power. He was exercising divine authority already His.
Then in Matthew 8:7–13, Jesus heals the centurion’s servant from a distance with only a word.
No touch. No presence required. Just authority.
That tells us something important:
Jesus is not limited by location, method, or circumstance.
He Has Authority Over Spiritual Battles
Ephesians 6:10–12 explains that our struggle is not really against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces.
Those forces are real.
But they are not equal to Christ.
Jesus does not fight darkness as an opponent trying to win. He rules over it as King.
That means the believer does not face spiritual conflict alone. The authority of Christ stands above every unseen power at work in the world.
He Has Authority to Forgive Sin
This is where everything comes together.
In Matthew 9:1–8, Jesus heals a paralyzed man. But before healing him physically, He says something even more important:
“Your sins are forgiven.”
The crowd reacts because they understand what that claim means. Only God can forgive sin.
So Jesus heals the man to prove His authority to forgive.
Healing showed the crowd what forgiveness could not be seen with their eyes.
Psalm 103:11–12 describes what that forgiveness truly does:
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
Not covered temporarily. Removed completely.
That is authority no human teacher could claim.
He Has Authority Over the Human Heart
In Matthew 11, when John the Baptist begins to struggle with doubt, Jesus does not argue theology. He points to what He has been doing.
The blind see.
The lame walk.
The sick are healed.
The poor hear good news.
His works reveal His identity.
They still do today.
Jesus has authority over sickness, nature, spiritual darkness, and sin itself. But even more than that, He has authority over the heart that feels burdened, uncertain, or worn down by life.
Nothing you are facing sits outside His reach.
That is the scope of His power.
Prayer
Lord,
We come before You grateful that nothing in our lives sits outside Your authority. You rule over the storm, over our bodies, and over our hearts. When things feel uncertain, remind us that You are still in control.
Strengthen our faith when we feel weak. Calm our fears when life feels overwhelming. Heal what is broken in us, whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual. Help us trust that You are working even when we cannot see it.
Thank You for the forgiveness You offer through Jesus. Thank You that our sins are not just covered but removed completely. Teach us to walk each day with confidence in Your power and humility in Your presence.
Help us rest in the truth that You are near, You are able, and You are faithful.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
